Meta Tags Explained: Title, Description, Keywords & More

What Are Meta Tags?
Meta tags are snippets of HTML that provide metadata about a web page. They don't appear on the page itself but are read by search engines and social media platforms to understand and display your content.
Meta Title (Title Tag)
The meta title is the clickable headline shown in search results. It's one of the strongest on-page ranking signals. Best practices: keep it between 50–70 characters, include your primary keyword near the beginning, and make it compelling enough to earn clicks.
Meta Description
The meta description is the summary text below the title in search results. While not a direct ranking factor, a well-written description improves click-through rate (CTR). Aim for 120–200 characters that accurately describe the page and include a call to action.
Meta Keywords
Though Google no longer uses the meta keywords tag for ranking, it can still be useful for internal site search and some other search engines. Focus on one strong long-tail keyword per page.
Open Graph & Social Meta Tags
Open Graph (og:) tags control how your pages appear when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other platforms. Twitter has its own card tags. Proper social meta tags ensure your content looks professional when shared, driving more social traffic.
